Cristiano Ronaldo’s thigh injury is a concern for Real Madrid as they prepare to face Manchester City in the Champions League semi-final first-leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old forward has been ruled out of Real’s Liga match at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday following the muscle injury he suffered in Wednesday’s 3-0 home win over Villarreal. He fell awkwardly and was forced to come off moments before the final whistle despite Real, going for their 11th European Cup, having used all three of their substitutes.
“Tomorrow [Ronaldo] will not play,” Real’s coach, Zinedine Zidane, said on Friday. “We did the scans and he has nothing serious but he cannot play. Then we will see day to day. Tomorrow he will stay at home. Then we will see about Tuesday.”
It will be the first league game of the season Ronaldo has missed. He had played every second of every match up until Wednesday.
On Friday Real released a statement confirming the injury but giving no indication of the recovery time.
The statement read: “Following tests carried out today on Cristiano Ronaldo in the Sanitas La Moraleja University hospital, he has been diagnosed with a muscle strain in his right thigh. His recovery will continue to be assessed.”
The former Manchester United player has scored 47 goals in 44 games for Real this season.
