Three Days of National Mourning In Ghana After Disasters

After a National Crisis meeting of the National Security Council, President John Mahama proclaimed that these disasters and the loss of about 160 lives have convinced leaders to set aside time to grieve.

After a large fuel station fire and flood waters wreaking havoc in Accra, flags are at half-mast throughout the nation for three days of national mourning.

Edward Boamah, the Minister for Communications, released a statement that called on Ghanaians and the wider public community to wear black or red arm bands and clothing.

"As we go about our work and other duties during the three days, let us remember the victims and pray for their souls and pray for strength and comfort for their families and friends."

This visual display would show solidarity with the disaster victim's families.

The mourning period will end on June 10th, 2015 with a memorial service at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle which is close to the site of the fire.

After instructing the government to take care of the hospital bills for victims as well as to distribute water, food, and other items to the affected communities, the President has also decided to attend the ceremony.
