At 3hrs 50mins, it was the third-longest match in French Open history and a reminder of Schiavone’s gruelling clash with Kuznetsova at the 2011 Australian Open.
Schiavone beat Kuznetsova in the longest women’s match, by time, in grand slam history in Melbourne, taking 4hrs, 44mins over a 6-4, 1-6, 16-14 scoreline.
Last night’s encounter featured nine successive service breaks before 2010 champion Schiavone advanced.
Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova again dodged a Roland Garros bullet, surviving Spain’s Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-2.
German Andrea Petkovic was also forced to produce her best, posting a 4-6 6-4 6-4 victory over Spanish qualifier Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
